 Community/Preventive Programs

AIM (Attendance Improvement Monitoring)

The Mendocino County District Attorney’s office, through its AIM program, will work together with the schools to encourage school attendance. Criminal prosecution will be instituted after the school district has exhausted their resources to achieve compulsory school attendance without success. Two conditions must occur prior to the District Attorney’s Office acceptance of a case:

  • The minor is an “habitual truant” as that term is defined in California Education Code Sections 48260, 48261, and 48262; and
  • The parent(s) failed to follow the directives of the School Attendance Review Board.

Once a case is accepted, a criminal complaint will be filed with the court. The parent(s) will receive a letter to appear in court on a given date and time. If the parent(s) fails to appear, an arrest warrant will be requested.

The parent will be entitled to an attorney, as well as a jury trial. It is hoped that most, if not all, parents will accept the terms and conditions of a deferred entry of judgment diversion program. The parent will enter a plea of guilty, agreeing that their child(ren) will attend school. If the program is successful, the criminal charges will be dismissed.

Youth Impact Program

This program helps young adults with self-esteem building, goal setting and positive reinforcement to effect change. This is a 30 day program for probation wards housed at juvenile hall. This group has a cognitive therapy group which meet once a week where the young adults work on identifying goals and how they can improve themselves and work together as a team. The other four days of the week the young adults work together to build up their physical fitness to prepare for a 3.2 mile honor run. During the four work out days the young adults utilize the self-esteem building tools and cognitive therapy concepts which give the young adults a positive reinforcement to complete this program and hopefully adopt these new skills into their everyday life.
