Local Organizations

The Willits Chamber of Commerce has a calendar of local activities of interest to many.

Willits Community Theater is a small theater that presents several pieces every year. Local performing artists create new shows as well as scripted performances.

The Mendocino County Museum is located next to the library. It is open to the public Wednesday through Sunday and has exhibits ranging from Pomo Indian basketry to a full replica of the soda fountain run by the sisters.

Located next to the museum is the Roots of Motive Power exhibit containing working machinery dating back to the early days of logging and ranching.

The Skunk Train runs from Willits to Fort Bragg twice a day in the summer with a lay over in Northspur for lunch and exploring the redwoods.

Among the many galleries the Willits Center for the Arts presents several art shows with thematic focus. The Chamber has their calendar of events.

A Little Bit of History

In 1905 John White started a free reading room in his office. By 1906 the first library board opened the first public library in Willits. The library moved several times including into the bowling alley behind the Hotel Willits. In 1915 the Carnegie Foundation donated the funds to build the new brick building that still stands at the corner of E. Commercial and Humbolt streets. The library was part of the city until 1975 when the Mendocino County Library system adopted it. Unfortunately, the building was subject to flooding. In 1986 severe floods filled the basement children's room three feet deep. As a result of local support and library grant funding the current building was built and opened in 1989.
